It seems like nowadays it’s most popular to be the “American Idol”, the next Lebron James or even the next “Top Model.” Let’s be honest…We know that the odds of a person becoming a superstar is very rare, but why is it such a great desire amongst youths? No doubt the media has shaped the way we view success, but are there core values embedded in their minds? Why does the average youth want to be a big star? Is it money? Is it power? Or is it just that they want to be noticed?
Interestingly, my research and observations have caused me to look toward a new group of youth who are actually making it popular “BE YOURSELF.” Particularly, in Vallejo, California, there is a group of about 70 youths (6 grade - college) who have recently completed a course in Lifeskills 411 and this life-altering course have given a new meaning to being popular.
Instead of trying to become the next Idol, kids are becoming community role models. Instead of practicing a sport everyday with hopes to become a professional star, kids are practicing discipline, positive thinking, effective communication, goal setting and other life skills to become future leaders and philanthropists for our country.
HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS -
Having taken some life skills courses myself, I say “Hooray” to the underdogs. For example, these are those who are okay with saying: “I love sports but I’m not professional material. I want to be a teacher.” Do we see this on TV? Do we give this kid endorsements? What do we do for the real idols? Where’s the media when a peer counselor saves the life of a suicidal youth? At best probably an article in the local paper – but no rewards. What do we truly value?
We are taught to stay tuned for the next show, we are taught how to pass test in school, but who’s teaching us to manage our thoughts, emotions and aspirations?
I’ve written this review to applaud all of those in the world who are okay with setting their own goals in life and not living life by the media-driven “status quo.”
What side are you on?
